Who, What & Why: Joining the Volunteer Commando Battalion
We pride ourselves on our realistic approach to ArmA while understanding that it is still a game and we're all here to enjoy playing it. We are fortunate to have a number of serving and former members of the British Army, Royal Marines Commandos and the other HM Armed Forces amongst the Senior NCOs and Other Ranks, who ensure our tactics remain current and as realistic as possible.
We aren’t looking for the most uber-1337 h4xx0r gamer (though we do have one or two), nor are we looking only for people with military experience. The ideal ‘VCBer’ is one who enjoys playing ArmA, has a laugh, isn’t easily offended (quite important with some of our language!) and wants to have a good time learning and putting into practice the training they receive as part of a team.
Please read the PDF VCB Info Pack for more.

If this all sounds like something you think you could commit to and would enjoy, then follow the application process below. You can also join our Discord if you want to check out joining routines or ask more about wider VCB activities.
STEP 1: Application
STEP 2: New Recruit Staging
Successful applicants will be invited to the Recruit Staging forum where you will find a guide on how to get setup for Phase 1 Training. An experienced VCB member, a Senior Rifleman (SR), will contact you as your mentor and will help you set up and schedule your Phase 1. It is your responsibility to ensure your game, mods and shortcut keys are in working order before Phase 1 Training starts and your SR can help you if you have any problems. It is also very important that you contact your SR if you can't make your scheduled Phase 1, do not leave it until the last minute!
STEP 3: Initial Training
New recruits must complete the Phase 1 Training package before being able to join in with VCB missions. Phase 1 lasts around 2 hours and is designed to teach and practice basic infantry skills, along with some VCB specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
STEP 4: Probationary Period
Upon completion of Phase 1 you're up to speed and will be able to fully join in VCB mission nights and explore other aspects of our community. You will be on probation for your first four complete missions and your SR, and other members, will continue to help and support you throughout. Once Platoon HQ is happy with your performance you will be posted to one of the infantry sections and become a full VOLCBAT member.
Q. What mods do you use? Do I need to install them?
A. We use a wide range of publicly available and in house custom mods designed to enhance the realism and fidelity of British Army milsim. Everything you need is provided in our mod repository that you will be able to download after you have completed Phase 1 training. Mods are managed via Steam and the ArmA3 launcher.
Q. Do I need Apex DLC?
Q. I posted an application but I no longer wish to join, what do I do?
A. If you change your mind after applying (it happens) please post in your application stating you no longer wish to join so we can take your name off the list and process other apps in a timely manner.
Q. I may have to go away for an extended period (4 weeks or more) is this going to be a problem?
A. This is generally not a problem as long as you let us know in advance. If you are absent from VCB for more than 4 weeks you will be put in the Reserve Section. If we hear nothing further from you your membership will be withdrawn after a month and you will be invited to reapply when you return.
Q. Do you play PvP?
A. No. We are a co-op milsim group. PvP games can be arranged for non-mission nights by individuals if they wish. We do very occasionally run ops that involve an element of player opposition, though usually for training purposes.
Q. Can I join as a pilot/sniper/specialist?
A. Everyone is a rifleman first. Specialist Qualifications are awarded to individuals after completing the prerequisite training courses. Support assets are only used in missions if we have a specific need for them on that op.
Q. I have real-life military experience, do I still need to do Phase 1 Training?
A. Yes. We want to ensure that everyone, regardless of actual experience starts on a level playing field. Depending on when (and where/with whom) you served the majority of our TTPs ought to be familiar to you; however some have been modified slightly to fit ArmA and as with any unit or sub-unit, we have our own SOPs and ways of conducting things.
