No better place for this. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00gd41j/Frontline_Afghanistan/

Very good film.  Full on stuff.

Thought it was a pretty brave film all things considered, given how the BBC tend to get bounced off the concrete if they don't paint a rosy picture. Most of it was very positive, especially the interviews with the Afghans that were about as in depth as a McDonald's advert, but to end with the interview with the troop leader and to hear him say that he didn't think they could win, it put the positivity of the first 90% of the film into perspective.

By the way am I just getting old or do soldiers always look like kids? Apart from the chubster troop leader and the other senior NCOs/Officers the actual soldiers all looked about 12.

Yeah I know what you mean about their ages - some of them really did look like, well, kids.  Watching these programs is facinating but also stressfull - I keep expecting a blank screen to come up after the credits saying "private so and so was killed 3 weeks later on the 3rd of May 2009 while on patrol".  How their families handle the anxiety I'll never know.

"How do I get out of this chicken shit outfit?"

Given VCB's reputation, I thought this vintage picture needs a link

Good effort Royal!

It brings a tear to my eye and the urge to shout "Naked bar."

Oh, uhm, my underwear suddenly got a bit wet.

Pic is of some Marines from late 2008 on Operation Sond Chara.

Here's a new one, it was in Soldier magazine recently and it's now up on the MoD Images website.

Quote
A weary soldier rests after a long night patrol. Soldiers from the Afghan National Army and 3rd Battalion (The Black Watch) The Royal Regiment of Scotland (3 Scots) had been searching compounds and destroying drug caches and narcotic manufacturing facilities in a joint operation following insertion by helicopter into the Upper Sangin Valley, Afghanistan.
